A FEW HOMESTEADS DESTROYED. A BOER DINNER PARTY DISTURBED. CAPETOWN, January 15. Major-General Babington and Colonel Pilcher, with the 9th and 12th Lancers, McLeish's Horse, and the Victorians and Queens^nders under Ricardo, accompanied by the N.S.W. ambulances, made an extensive reconnaissance covering three days, into the Free State. The force penetrated 25 milss, scouting within four miles of Jacobsdal (near tho Modder River, about 30 miles to the south-east of Kimberley, and on the main line of road to the Free State capital), where there was no great force of the enemy. The country is rich and open. The few homesteads where the Boers encamped were destroyed. The Queenslanders, with, two guns, were sent to dislodge a force holding a kopje. Before opening fire, it was discovered that the supposed Boers were Victorians, whose hats resembled the Boers*. During Babington's reconnaissance, the Quoensianders surprised a dozen Boera dining at a farm. The men escaped, but Ihe Qucenslanders appropriated their dinner.
