PUTRID TINNED. FOOD.
At Greenwich Police Court recently, Charles W. Baxter, of Camberwell, was summoned in two cases for having (15 deposited for sale, tinned, meat, fish, soup, fruit, and condensed milk, the, samo being unfit for food; and (2) for selling tins of fish and condensed milk also unfit for human food. — Mr Stokes prosecuted and Mr Ccard defended.— Mr Stokes said the defendant sold the business in Paradise Street to a Mra Grrnt on Nov. 23. On Nov. 30 Mr Davieß, sanitary inspector, went to the shop, and, at, Mrs Grant's request, examined the tins. He had to defer part rf, the examination, until nest dajr on aocount of the smell. — Thomas Dayies sanitary inspector, said the premises weio kept as a general shop, lie went, to tho place on two or three occasions and seized over 1100 tins of fish, soup, meat, tomatoes, and milk. They stank badly. AVitness called the medical officer <if health and subsequently brought the tins . to the magistrate, who condemned rho goods. — Mr Kennedy: Yes, and I was nearly made sick.— Davics, cross-exam-ined, said some of the things were in tlw back promises ; but the greater part were in the shop. There were 444 tins in tho scullery, and 239 included in tho summons had been sold to Mrs Grant with tho business. They were in tho Bhop window. Tho defendant said he kept tho shop for ten months, and had no ronson to think the goods wore bad. ,Ho had always preferred to open the tins for , customers. He had not noticed any smell from tho tins. Mr Davics (recalled) said some of the tins wero what wero known as "blown" tins. By a careful

over. * ' Mr Kennedy said theso were horrible revelations of what could be sold t>? the -t poor people of Rotherhithe. Defendant's suspicions must have, been raouscd, and he had not satisfied him (the magistrate) Tho sale of this stuff in a , poor neighbourhood could not bo passed off lightly, and dofondant would bo fined,, .£SO in each of tho two cases, or one month Jrt each. If ho could find the man who pricked the blown tins he would give him six months.— Notice of appeal was givon. > 5
