AN IMPUDENT BURGLARY.

Strong evidence of an impudent burglary having been committed at the residence of Mr Paul, Brougham-street (says the Taranaki Herald) was discovered late on Saturday afternoon. The act was perpetrated during the absence of Mr and Mrs Paul, who are on a visit to Wanganui, and it is evidently the work of some amateur or mischievously disposed person. The Bervant left the house on Thursday afternoon whtn everything was in an apparent safe condition, but on returning on Saturday, the place was in a state of wild disorder. The bed clothes were removed, a chept of drawers had been opened and the contonta thrown about, and a jewel case belonging to Mrs Paul had been forced open. Whether any jewellery or other property is missing cannot be ascertained until Mr and Mrs Paul'd return, but the police are inclined to think that little of any value has* been taken. The perpetrator had ÜBed, in an amateurish manner, an old saw, and a knife and fork to prise open tho jewel case, and force the locks of tho drawers. Ono of tho windows was open, but tho police are of opinion that an entrance was gained through ono of the doois, as all the windows have burglar-proof fastenings, and, according to the servant, were locked on Thursday. Active enquiries have beon made, but the affair is still wrapped in a mantle of mystery.
