BREACH OF THE LICENSING ACT.

Supplying Liquor to Maori Women.

At the Police Court to day (Friday) before Mr O. C. Kettle, S.M., Charles Wise, ferryman of Wangaehu, was charged with unlawfully supplying liquor to two Maori women on Sunday, Ist January. Sorgeant Dtryer, who appeared in the local Court for the first time, conducted the proseontion, and Mr W. J. Troadwell appeared for tho defendant, who pleaded not guilty. Evidence for the prosecution was given by Edward Green and Frank Stanbury, who both deposed having seen defendant bring beer from the Wangaehu Hotel across the river to a group of Maoris (amongst whom were some Maori women), aud also saw them pay for it. Defendant gave evidence on his own behalf, and admitted providing the beer, but naid lie was asked to get it by one of the Maori men, Albert, who paid for it. Albert was also called as a witness, and corroborated this. The Magistrate said he had not the ' slightest doubt tho offence was committed, and fined the defendant £2 10s oh each charge, with edsts; Tw'd other charges against the same defendant, for selling liquor without a license, were withdrawn by the police, as the transaction was all one.
