' (Per United Press Association.) Pahiatda, May 27. A child three years of age, the daughter of D. Tooney, a settler at Scarborough, dieS this morning from burns received yesterday. She was playing with other children burning paper and her clothes caught fire and burned her severely. Carterion, May 27. Medeline Cross, who was arrested yesterday on a charge of child murder, was a domestic servant aged 18. The body of the infant was found on Wednesday night quite dead, its throat having been cut open with a pair of scissors. The accused was confined on Sunday during the absence of her employers, who were from home all day. She disposed of after traces, but was too ill to take the body away. The accused came here from Wellington less than six months ago. Her condition was unsuspected. An inquest is being held to-day.
