The Central Route.

(By Telegraph— Own Correspondent).

Auckland, April 25.

Returning to the question of the rival railway routes, the Star says :— The report of Messrs Beetham, Buchanan, and Wilson on the country proposed to be traversed by tho Trunk Railway is a most important contribution to controversy, and should have tho effect of stopping the construction of the lino via Tokano and Marton untd the middle of noxt century; at any rate, the report i 3 an unmistakable condemnation of the eighty miles of country between Huntervifle and Tokano, and the fact of its coming from three gentlemen representing constituencies that would be interested in the construction of the railway by that route should carry additional weight, moreover two of them, Messrs Beetham and Buchanan^are practical agriculturalists and pastorilists, and being such they cannot be mistaken as to the quality of the land, we venture to express an opinion that the report of Messrs Beetham and Buchanan will have more weight with the House than the outrageously misleading accounts which have emanated from interested officials of the Public Works Deptrtment, and which co nearly committed the colony to a costly blunder. It is worthy of note too that both Messrs Buchanan and Beetham have in tho past been strenuous supporters of tho central lino, and it is much to their credit that, having ascertaiaed their provious faith was based upon wrong premises, they have boldly and honestly given a tacit admission of their former error
