The 'Frisco Service.
(By Telegraph — Own Correspondent).
Auobxand, April 25.
Tho Star draws attention to the insidious attack which is being made upon tho San Francisco mail service. The fact of Auckland being the port of call for that service appears sufficient ground for perpistent opposition to it in Wellington, as in tho South leland. The expiry of the present contract with the Union and tho Oceanic Steamship Companies, wliich takes place within a few months, is apparently to be made the occasion of another attempt to effect a retrograde movement in the matter of mail services. It behoves not only Auckland members, but all those who have the welfare of the colony at heart, to guard carefully against any such step whioh may bo pressed on. The insidious plea of economy to drop tho 'Frisco service and increase the subsidy to direct steamers would entail immediate and serious loss to the rovenue, owing to tho loss of postages that would ensue through a large proportion at the New Zealand letters being sent via Suez. Unless there is an early prospect of a better service being provided by way of Vancouver and tho Canadian Pacific Railway, our Government should certainly renew the contract for the despatch of mails via 'Frisco.
