INSTALLATION OF MAYOR.
The ceremony of installing the Mayor for the year 1884 5 was performed to*day in the Council Chambers. There was a fair attendance of the public. The Crs present were Messrs Bell, Neill, Manson, Murray, Tod, and Richards. Cr Bell took the chair. He read the clause of the Act requiring the meeting, and then called on the Town Clerk to read the Returning Officer's certificate. This being done, the Clerk read the usual declaration, which Mr Spurdle signed. Cf Bell then vacated the chair, and in doing so said he had great pleasure in testifying to the manner in which Mr Spurdle had performed his duties, and thought it augured well for Borough and the interests of the various Wards that such a man was in the position of Mayor. As Mayor he was not supposed to look after any one Ward in particular, as he had all matters connected with the Borough under his care and supervision. He believed that Mr Spurdle's term of, office would be to the welfare of Wanganni. Mr Spurdle then took the chair, aud in doing so he said that baying been elected to the honorable position of Mayor, he entered on his duties with every confidence, feeling sure that he would have the hearty co-operation of ,tfae Councillors at that table in hia endeavours for the Borough. Crs would no doubt tate an interest in seeing that the estimates for the coming year were framed with a due regard to economy, & Q d an impartial expenditure ot the Borough funds throughout the town. Cr Bell had referred to the fact that in the new duties be (the speaker) would not have to consider ward distinctions, but that bis services belonged to the borough aß, a whole. He would endeavour to' the, best of his ability to see that every part of the Borough had a fair share of attention paid to it. It would not be his fault if at the expiration of his term of office, the confidence of the ratepayers was not realised. His Worship then resumed his seat amidst applause. ' Cr Murray congratulated His Worship on his election. Judging from past experience he had no reason to doubt but tbat they would work harmoniously for the pood' of the Borough. Referring to the late Mayor, Cr Murray said that he thought it right that his services should be acknowledged, and he had pleasure in thanking Mr Carson for the manner in which he had performed his duties. Cr Manson also congratulated the newlyelected Mayor, who, undoubtedly, had the confidence of the ratepayers as a whole. With regard to the services of Mr Carson, he corroborated Cr Murray's remarks* The Town Clerk then read a letter of congratulation from the late Mayor (who was unable to be present), Mr Carson also expressed his deep sense of the courtesy received from the Councillors, and of the attention paid by the officers of the Council to his wishes.
Cr Richards congratulated the Mayor on his eleotion, as did Crs Neill and Tod. The Mayor having returned thanks for the kindly remarks made, and also having added his testimony to those given in favor of' the late Mayor, the meeting dispersed.
