ATTEMPTED MURDER AND SUICIDE AT DUNEDIN.

It seems that a dance took place there, during which a German rose up and shot a woman through the neck. It is not known yet whether the woman is dead. Latru.
Some excitement • was caused at North East Valley last evening through a report of attempted murder and suicide. It appears that Banchop Jacob Vandyke shot Mary Ann Wadswortb, wounding her slightly, and afterwards attempted to take his own life. A party was being held in Cameron's Upper Junction Hotel, at which a dozen or more people were present, including Miss Wade worth. Shortly after nine o'clock Vandyke entered the room where thfr company were engaged dancing. He took a seat at the side of the room, but almost immediately rose to bis feet, and, presenting a revolver at Miss Wadaworth's head, fired at: her. She was dancing at the time, and the bullet grazed the side of her neck, infiiotinc a slight wound. She fell into the arms of her partner. Vapdybe, seeing the, first shot had not taken effect, took aim with the intention of firing again, but the revolver missed fire. He than attempted to shoot himself, but being rushed by the by-standers, the muzzle of the revolver was forced downwards and the bullet entered the floor. Vandyke was then secured, aud the police Bent for. Dr Martin, who was also sent for, ascertained Miss Wadsworth's injury to be slight, and she would be quite well in two or three days. On searching Vandyke at the look-up, a packet of cartridges was found. Prisoner is a gardener, who owns property at the June*, tion, and has resided there for six years, He is a German by birth, and apparently is about 47 years of age. Miss Wadsworth is 17, and the daughter of » dairyman, wellknown in the district. Vandyke is believed to have paid addresses to her, and being accorded but slight encouragement, became jealous. Thiß is the only motive for the deed.
