December 12. Government have decided to re-instate six sub-inspeotors, who were by the late Governments, during the retrenchment scheme, reduced to sergeant-majors, to their former positions as -third class inspectors. They will continue at the same scale of pay for the present, but next session an increase will be considered and provision made on the estimates. ,,.i.i ■ -i. The Surveyor-General will ..shortly visit here, and report upon all Crown lands as to their suitableness for the purpose of the Association Special Settlements, The probable price of land under tho scheme will hot exceed one pound per acre, exclusive of the cost of survey. The new series of Civil Service regulations,, intended to enforce more punctual and regular attendance during office hours, have been prepared, and will be shortly, issued. ' Government have received a cf»ble from the Agent-General giving the proposed alter•tions in. the Federation Enabling Bill. They are generally unimportant, the most, import- I ant being to give power to the legislature of j any colony to withdraw from the operations ' of the bill. Messrs Stafford, Buckley, and Pitzherbert . will act as solicitors for Sir Juiiuß Yogel in the libel action against the Times, and the Attorney-General has been retained. Rumours of intended removal of inspectors' of police are without foundation, Government having no changes in contemplation. Mr Roehfort, who is in charge of the surveys of the North Island Mfcin Trunk Railway hopes to have the fifteen miles southward from Te Awamutu completed by the middle of January. The necessary plans will be finished a month later, when tenders will be called for the work.
