December 6.

Mr Lock addressed his constituents last night. He strongly urged the improvement of local government, encouragement of local industries, and, above all, the settlement of the native land difficulties by the Government consolidating and amending the bill next session, so as to more particularly effect improvements as to subdivisions. An unanimous vote of thanks and confidence was passed.

The Supreme Court offices at Wanganu and Palmerston North have been appointed local patent offices, and Mr W . G. Woon and Mr A. R. T; Hautain have been appointed patent office agents accordingly.

As will be seen by our advertising columns our drapers are getting ready for a Christmas trade, and special bargains are announced by two of the leading houses, Mr P. Bell quotes goods at prices whicli should command a rush, and enable him to clear off a lot of goods. Mr T. Bush is not behindhand in the same matter, and his- windows and doors aro ticketed at prices which should speedily effect the emptying of his fixtures. Christmas is pre-eminently the time for good things, and good house-wives should lay in a stock.

The committee for the Friendly Sooietios' Picnic, met last evening, when 18 members were present, Mr Quinu in the chair, Mr Dustin's tender for catering was accepted. It was resolved to have the course roped off, with openings for the people to go through between the events. There being a great quantity of material to go out, Messrs Quinn, Bone, and Briggs were appointed a aub-oom-mitttee to arrange for the best means o f getting it out. Coburn's merry- go-round was ordered to be engaged for the day, and the tickets were to be ready for next meoting. Messrs Kearney and Turaioh were appointed gate keepers, and it was resolved that committeemen should be stationed at St. John's and at Aramoho on New Year's morning for the sale of tickets. The pieces for the Richardson's Show were reported as being in aotive rehearsal, From a plan of the tent for the Richardson Show, we find that the main body of the tent will be 40ft long by 15ft in width, with a wall of 7 feet in height on three sides. The stage is to be 12 x 15, and the outside stage will be 12 x 12, round both or these there will be a 12ft wall. Everything seems going smoothly, and there little doubt but that given fine weather, the Friendly Societies' Picnic this year will be a great success.
