AUCKLAND.

December 5.

The remains of the late Hon. Mr W, Swainaon was interred yesterday. Sir Geo. Grey, Mr Whitaker, Dr Shortland, Sir G. M. O'Rorke, Tole, and Pollen were amongst the mourners.

Captain Edwin telegraphs (I p.m.) :— Bad weather approaching, same as wired yesterday in every respect. Glass will rise soon.

At the last parade of the Marton Royal Rifles Captain Skerman announced that it was now certain tbat the Royal Rifles would attend the annual encampment at Nelson.

The Hawera Star states — We learn from Mr Samuel that the Government have decided to give Sergeant-Major Pardy charge of the police force of Taranaki, and that Hawera will be transferred from Wanganui District to Taranaki;

The Hon, John Ballance, finding that he cannot attend to his duties as member of the Licensing Committees iv Wanganui, has forwarded his resignation. The Governor will appoint members to occupy his seats on the three committees.

The Queen's Ward Licensing Bench was to have met this morning, to transact business, but Messrs Cummins and Bamber were the only members who attended. The sitting was adjourned till to-morrow. The only business to do is to consider an application for transfer to E. Brodie.

The Okoia Dairy Factory is we learn making steady progress. Of the new season's cheese over a ton has been sold, a very creditable fact, when it is considered that the cheese has nob been on the market many days. There are now 12 tons on hand of the new make. The quantity of milk received daily is 591 gallons and company although they have two large vats, are making arrangements to procure a third.

A specimen of local industry of an artistic description is to be seen in the window of Mr Donald Ross, cabinet maker. We refer to a set of Masonic fittings made in Mr Ross' establishment for the Marton lodge. The set consists of 2 warden's columns, of Doric and Corinthian architecture, three large masters' and wardens' columns for the east, weat, and north lights, in the lonic, Doric, and Corinthian styles of architecture. There are also three gavels, and a mallet. The whole are manufactured from rimu, and are very creditable specimens of the work which can be turned out in the establishment. The carving on the Corinthian capitals is well executed, and in all respects the columns are properly designed. The Marton lodge are certainly to be congratulated on being able to obtain suoh fittings so cloae at hand as Wanganui*
