July 23. The New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Tongariro left Plymouth for Port Chalmers on the sth instant.

A man named Gardner, residing at Kaitoke, had a narrow escape of being killed yesterday evening. He sat down on the rails and went to sleep. On the evening train approaching, the engine driver noticed an object in front, and slackened speed. The cowcatcher caught the man, and inflicted a nasty scalp wound. Gardner is now recovering. It ia stated that Dr Chilson, of Christchurch, will succeed Dr Keyworth as resident surgeon of the Wellington Hospital. *•
