Received January 6, 1 p.m. Adelaide, January 6. — At a public luncheon to Sir Wm, Jervois yesterday, 180 persons were present, including ministers and judges and leading citizens. His Excellency in his speech, urged caution in borborrowing, favored immigration, and advocated federation of the Australian colonies. Received Jan 6th, 1.55 p.m. Paris, Jan 5 (evening).— The body of the late M. Gambetta is now lying in State at Palais Bourbon, in the Rue de Luniversite. Thousands of persons have visited the Chambers to pay respect to the deceased statesman. The death is announced to-day of General Chanzy, aged 60. London, Jan 5 (evening). — Mr JohnGivan, M.P for Monaghan, has been appointed under secretary for Ireland, vice Mr R. G. C. Hamilton, who was provisionally appointed to the position on the death of Mr Thomas Burke. Mr Hamilton resumes his former position as permanent under secretary for the : Admiralty. The Wanganui Volunteer district is now under command of the New Plymonth district officer, Major Stapp. Mr Watt will no doubt be fully able to explain why this should be when he meets his constituents sometime during the present year. j
