BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The ordinary adjourned fortnightly meeting of the Council was held on Friday afternoon. Present— The Mayor (in the chair), Crs Nathan, Notman, Spurdle, Ward, and Bell. New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company. — Mr Stevenson attended, and obtained permission provided the ComSany undertook the whole of the cost to lay own wooden blocks to the approaches to Loan Company's building on the Quay, and also the curbing required. Pound. — The Mayor stated that the Committee appointed to report on the condition of the ground were not prepared yet, but the matter would come forward at the next meeting. Pish in Virginia Lake.— Cr Notman said that the objection of Mr Brewerthat Prussian carp were unsuitable fish to stock Virginia Lake should have all due defference paid as coming from an authority on the matter. — The Town Clerk stated that he had spoken to Mr. Russell about the class of fish, and he was willing to allow it to stand over. — The Mayor intimated that the question should stand over for the present, and in the meantime he would make enquiries. Maria Place. — In answer to Cr Ward, the Foreman of works replied that the work required at Chevanne's corner would be proceeded with immediately on the arrival of the pipes. Footpath. — The formation of a footpath from Dublin to Plymouth Streets on the left side of Bell Street was on the suggestion of the Mayor agreed to. — The Mayor stated that Cr Jones had resigned his seat in the Council for Queen's Ward. Application from. Mb Kennedy. — Mr Kennedy applied for leave to lay down a larger pipe into his yard, in Wilson Street, and further stated he would not use the pipe except in case of fire, therefore he should wish the Council to withdraw the stipulation that he should provide a meter. — Cr Notman said that he was averse to granting the application, for they must protect themselves against people ÜBing the water for other purposes. — Cr Ward thought they should grant the required leave, — Cr

St. Hill Street.— Mr Purnell, Inspector of Nuisance, reported on the condition of the old buildings in St Hill Street, to the effect that there was no danger to passengers, us tho houses would not fall into the street, but the danger was from firo, as night wanderers were_ y in tho habit of sleoping thero. — The Mayor remarked that thoy could not legally cause the removal of tho buildings unless they endnuitorori tho traffic in tho street. — On the motion of Cr Notman, it was decided to write the Public Trustee, in whoso charge the property is requesting its removal. COPELAND AND NIBLET STREETS. — The Inspector of Nuisances reported that these streets were also in a bad condition in consequence of there being no outlet for the stagnant water that accumulated in pools in the centre of the road. — Cr Spurdle said that there were several other streets needed attention, but he was not prepared to bring forward a scheme to meet the question at present. — Cr Notman said that the byestreets wanted dealing with in a comprehensive manner, and he would propose that a Committee consisting of himself, Crs Spurdle, and Ward to report on the streets requiring attention. — Agreed to. Mathieson Street.— A letter was received from the residents of Mathieson Street, asking the Council to take steps to have the street improved and metalled. — It was decided to clear the street and put the footpath in order. China and Harrison Streets. — It was decided, on the motion of Cr Notman, to call for tenders for the filling in of an open drain in China and Harrison Streets with sand taken from the Queen's Park Reserve, adjoining the pound. Accounts.— Accounts to the amount of £288 10s 3d for the Hospital, and general expenses £263 4s 8d were passed for payment The Council then adjourned.
