At the usual fortnightly meeting: last, night, there were present— The Mayor (chair), Crs Chadwick, Pollock, Willis, Kells, Hurley, Brown, and Caraon, The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed; ' '[ Mbs Haib's Claim. — Or Chadwick reported the result of the committee's investigation of this matter, and it. was decided to "wind up the lawsuit without delay.
Oobbespondence.— Thos. Green asked for water pipes to be laid on to his premises. Application held over for Foreman to report.
W. Crnickshank and others WToto asking for curbing in Upper St Hill -street to be repaired. The Foreman instructed to make needful repairs.
Eugenic Kuhte asked permissioa to erect a fish stall near Market Square. Application refused. . A ratepayer asked what steps he should take to oblige his* neighbour, a lessee of the Council, to fefnce. The leases-con-taining a clause . that ' they will be' forfeited if the sections' are not fenced iv six months, the Clerk was instructed to give public notice that unless this condition was complied with, the Borough would enforce the penalty. ,
Habbor Boaed. — Letter read fi'om the Harbor Board asking the Council to accept Taupo Wharf aB a right of way, udder clause of the Act. There ap-» peared to be some doubt as to the object of the Harbor Board in making the oner, . and the responsibility of the Council in ; accepting it. A motion was first brought forward by Cr "VViUis that the offer be accepted, but it was, after further consultation of the Act, withdrawn in favor of a motion by Cr Carson, that permission should be granted to the Harbor Board to make the right of way. This was seconded - by Cr Brown and carried. ' Mr B, McCaul waited upon the Council to represent the grievances of the Wanganui cabmen in respect of the scale - of charges fixed by the Council. He said ' the cabmen were of opinion that 6d should be charged up to Guyton Street, and that ss , per hour should be charged for two* horse vehicles.
The matter waa referred back to the Cab Committee, Cr Brown being added thereto.
In response to an application from Mr J. Keid for the water to b© laid on to huf residence on the Hirer Ba n <k , Cr Hurley moved, That pipes be laid under the footpath, close to the fence, for such as require water; eeaonded by, Ct Willis. Carried.
An application for a drain by Mr Alexander, Ingestre Staeet, was recomended to be complted with by the Foreman of ' ' Works.
Cr Pollock moved and Cr Chadwick seconded — That the drain be laid from the Avenue to Wickateed Street, upon Mr Alexander paying half co3t to his own gate. Carried. ■ h
Captain Cummins' letter, • urging the Council to take steps for the prevention of fires through defective chimneys, &&os. s was referred to a committee consisting of Crs Brown, Willis, Chadwick, and jth© Mayor. ' Or Kells said that as it was his last meeting he would like to make a suggestion, namely, that the Forema*L of Works • be sent to Wellington for a week to gain experience. He thought) it would .cost a 1 matter of £10, and would be money well . spent. He had been in Wellington a few days ago, and he observed that the concrete was made more rapidly and inexpensively there than, in Wanganui, and generally the Foreman would' get" an insight into the management of works which would be yery:useful to him. ■ ' The Mayor said his observation was at variance with that of Cr ,*ell3. He also - had taken notes when in Wellington, but had flattered himself .that Wanganui was rather in advance than behind WeUing-
