WANGANUI HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

The Show last night was well attended, although from the really excellent arrangements marie to prevent over crowding, no inconvenience was felt. The fountain, of course, attracted the lion's share of attention, and well it merited it. No time or trouble had been spared in its erection, and great credit is due to Mr Leslie for his gratuitous labours. The Drum and Fife Band or the Wnnganui Volunteer Corps enlivened the evening with some carefully rendered music, a duet between two of the members being correctly and sweetly played. It was a great pity that better order was not kept while this piece of music was being played, as the noise marred the sweetness of the music. Near the time for closing, an auction sale of the exhibits was held by Ml- Chad wick, and while it lasted' very good prices were obtained. We have been favoured by Mr E. T. Woon, the indefatigable Secretary of the So ciety, with a correct list of the prizes :— FLOWERS. Ist prize (fuch«ia) ... Mr Campbell Ist prize (geranium') ... Mr J. Their awards were made with care and judgment, and gave universal satisfaction. Mr J. A. Burnett judged the jams, and found extreme difficiilty in arriving at a decision, all being most excellent, but after careful consideration gave the prize to Mrs Russell.. The show was in every way a most complete success, mainly attributable to the energy displayed by the committee.

A MEx?IT PRESERVING COMPANY. A meeting- called by circular was held yesterday at the Commercial Hotel, for the purpose of considering what steps should be taken for the forming of a Meat Preserving Company in Wanganui, the following gentlemen being present: —H. Ho moved that a subscription be opened for the purpose of raising £100 to meet the expense of preliminary operations and enquiries. The motion was seconded and unanimously carried.
