Correspondence.

THE ENGLISH CHURCH,

To the Editor of the Evening Herald. Wanganui, Feb. 20. Sir—l would suggest that some immediate steps be taken to procure a Minister for the English Church. The congregation cannot stand lay readers any longer. 1 have always thought that an appeal ought to be made to the Rev. Mr Towgood, who is a thorough Christian gentleman, with a heart in the work, and possessed of eloquence that would adorn any pulpit. I well know that Mr Towgood holds high church doctrines; but I may say that no clergyman is animated by- a more liberal spirit, or fulfils the precepts more faithfully of a wide catholic Christianity. I have ventured to write this, because it is possible the church may get an unknown man, and be disappointed. A clergyman cannot, like a coat, be cut to pattern for a congregation. In my humble opinion the one quality that should be lookedvfor is " heart in the work." Our church has been tern asunder by internal quarrellings and perpetual discord, and it is become very low in the scale of religious denominations. The cure is, a noble Christian minister who will heal dissensions and promote good-will. Christianity consists tadoiner good, not in preaching it or balancing tetts. Given a good man in his life, and he must necessarily be a good Christian. This iB what our church in 'Wanganui has sorely wanted. —I am, &c,

A Churchman.
