THE LECTURE SERIES.
TO THE EDITOR OP THE EVENING HERAM)
Wanganui, May 12, 1869
Sib, —I do. not agree -with " True Church " in his ideas about praying in unhallowed places, such as-the Odd Fellows' Hall; but neither do I agree with praying at the commencement of secular lectures. If I refer to Mr Fox's, for instance, I find the meeting opened ■with prayer, and immediately after " roars ,of laughter," "loud laughter," &c, together with such choice flowers as, " fossicking," and " funoodling." In music, a delicate ear is hurt" by the" slightest discord; and the faintest incongruity of association, as in colors or architecture, produces a revulsion in the mind. Fo it is with a lecture, when things so incongruous as prayer and laughter are brought into contacts Ido not think any one will maintain that laughter should be omitted for the sake of introducing the prayer, and I think most people will agree that the two things do not run well together. If I were a Catholic I should object to prayer on other grounds; but .'in. that case they might say, if I did not like it I might remain away, which would be reducing the lectures to a sectarian level; and this, I ana given to understand, would be foreign to the. views of the promoters of these lectures.—l am, &c.
Ant Church ob No Church.
