SERIOUS FIRE AT CHARLESTON.
EARTHQUAKE IN CHRISTCHURCH. THE MAORI PRISONERS. (BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH.) (from: our own correspondent.) Charleston, Wednesday. A fire occurred here last night. Five houses were consumed, and one was pulled down to stay the conflagration. The properties destroyed are those of Perrott, butcher ; Mirfin, Black Bull Hotel; Behan, Commercial Hotel; Taylor, fruiterer ; the Hibernia Hotel. and M'Kee's stables. The loss is estimated at £9OO. No lives were lost. The fire originated in the Commercial Hotel, rented by Miss Hegarty. It was caused by the bursting of a keiosene lamp. Christchtjrch, Wednesday. A smart shock of earthquake was felt here at one o'clock in the morning. An offer of advantageous terms is likely to be made to induce the expected All England Eleven to visit Dunedin. Seventy-four Maori prisoners leave Wellington to-day for Dunedin.
M'Donnell has returned after a fruitless chase after Te Kooti in the bush. The weather interfered with his operations. A meeting is to take place between Mr M'Lean and the King Natives at Waikato. There have been heavy rains all throughout the Colony, but it is now clearing up.
