The Superintendent's election has ended in a large maj'irity—over 600—for Mr Curtis. The following are the returns from the different polling places from which intelligence has been received. The totals are yet incomplete, as the returns from Collingwood, Takaka, the Amuri, and some other places, have not come forward. Above the figures we give only the initial letters of Curtis, Gibbs, and A kersten :
Mr Poppleton Horn had a total of six. The Colonist's statement of the majority for Mr Curtis is exclusive of Brighton, the Caledonian, Addison's, and Cobden. Our Charleston correspondent's written description of the fire we are compelled to hold over, one of our compositors having gone to Charleston to assist in remedying the effects of an accident in the Herald office. He estimates the loss now at £ISOO. A subscription for the sufferers has been opened. We understand that the re-elected Superintendent, Mr Curtis, is expected to visit this part of the Province in three weeks or a month. Mr Cotterell, on Tuesday evening, gave another entertainment which, at present, we caimot further notice than by saying that it was of a very high and rare character. In the Resident Magistrate's Court, on Tuesday, judgment by default was given in the following civil cases : M'Gill and Bull v. Peter Grant, .£ls 16s; same v. John "Wormy, £7 14s ; Fleming and Murray v. B. Docherty, £1 ; M'Ginley v. C. Webb,' £7 7s 6d ; Lempfert v. Joyce, »£5 9s Bd. The Jockey Club met at the Post Office Hotel on Tuesday evening. The following gentlemen were ballotted for as joining members, and were duly elected:—Messrs Lempfert, Overcnd, Robertson, Lewis, and Maguire. Messrs Harris, Southern, Simpson, Overend, and Franklyn were elected as stewards. This composed the business of the evening. An extra edition of Saturday's Examiner contains a report from Motueka that an auriferous quartz reef has been discovered on Mr Betitson's land at Orinoco. It is said to promise well. At the monthly meeting of the Hospital Committee on Tuesday evening, Oxner's tender for fencing, and Russell's for additions to the Hospital were accepted. The consideration of the revised rules was postponed until Tuesday next, and the House Steward's letter was held over until the same date. Messrs Bailie, Sheahan, and Munson were appointed the Visiting Committee for the month of November.
