Mr Gibbs, one of the candidates for the Superintendency, arrived in Westport by the Kennedy, and last night addressed a meeting in the Masonic Hall. The night upon which the meeting was I>3' necessity hold was unfavorable to our giving now a full report, as wo did of Mr Akersten's speech ; but we shall publish it in a supplement this afternoon. Today, Mr Gibbs proceeds to the Terraces, to Charleston, and to Brighton. We regret that we are unable to find room for a deservedly severe article in the Colonist on the " seizure" of the auriferous land at Wangapeka by the Nelson G overnmentoifieials, or for an article we had written on the subject. We understand that Mr Broid and one of the police force here have been sent for. The thing is to be thoroughly advertised by a large amount of official excitement, and the West Coast is to pay for it. Mr Cotterell, whom we have already mentioned as the author of a novel and attentive stage entertainment, arrived by the Kennedy, and makes his first appearand: — we hope before a large audience —this evening, at the Masonic Hall. We are told that the first horse which has made the journey of the Buller track, past Hawk's Crag, did so on Thursday. Lately a large amount of work has been done in clearing and reforming this track, and in re-erect-ing brii'ges. We hear that Thomas and party, on Mon day last, struck payable gold on German Terrace, in the claim adjoining that of Hepburn and party, who lately discovered a new run of gold. The gold has been struck on the German creek side of the spur. It is in this locality that there was a small rush about six weeks ago. It is fully expected that, in a few days, there will be some still better news from this terrace. Dr Giles's lecture at Kelson is shortly to be published. This is excuse sufficient for our giving only the fractional report which we quote from the Nelson papers.
