napoleon's. A correspondent of the Grey River Argus, writing from Napoleon's on the 10th instant, says: —The commercial prosperity of Napoleon's is somewhat depressed at present in consequence of the remarkably fine weather, rain being much needed to enable the different parties to wash upAll the business people complain of the place being overdone. Houses are still in course of erection, and Mr J. Creed inaugurated his new hotel va. the middle township on Friday evening
with a grand opening ball. A friend, remarking the heterogeneous character of the guests, declared it a sign of the speedy appearance of the millennium, all denominations being turned to one creed. THE TAIPO QUaKTZ-BEEF. Writing of the rutnoied quartz discovery the Hokitika correspondent of the Grey mouth Star says :• — Trade has been suspended in consequence of the excitement, and a number of cheques have been dishonored. In fact, the people hardly know what they are doing. Several persons have mysteriously disappeared, and the police are not even troubling themselves to ascertain whether they have been murdered and thrown into water-holes and lagoons. The absentees' creditors are the only ones who appeared to be interested. The Borough Councillors have ceased to meet, and consequently they do not call one another bad names. The drapers are all selling oft' and going away —although, in conseqi;;:;ce of the quartz discoveries, they will now probably remain. There is also some building going on—one man having erected a verandah—simple and chaste, both in design and execution, consisting of two upright posts and a canvas sheet. There is also a new greengrocery started. The proprietor's stock-in-trade, however, for the present, consists of three tons of carrots, which were brought here by a sailing vessel.
