THE AMALGAM ROBBERY AT ADDISON'S.
At the "Westport Court, on Monday, Stephen M'lntyre was remanded for a week, on a charge of stealing 300 ounces of amalgam at Addison's Flat. He had been previously remanded
from Nelson. The following report of the proceedings there appears in the Colonist :— Detective - officer Lambert gave evidence of the fact of information having been made by M'Greehan, and also that prisoner had stated to him that he had sold out of the claim for £4Q, and that was all the money he had. Dr Coombe, for plaintiff, said that no charge could lie in the case, as even if the facts were as stated, prisoner being a partner in the claim could not be guilty of stealing his own property. There was an end of the case. ' The Resident Magistrate refused to accept the objection and allowed the case to go on. Inspector Shalcrass deposed to having arrested the prisoner, and finding £l6 odd on his person in money, and a number of papers. He stated to witness that he had purchased a draft on Victoria for £260, with moneys he had secreted from his creditors in Victoria, where he had been bankrupt, and was still uncertificated; that this money consisted of sovereigns, which he kept in a bag, and had hidden in the ground from his mates at the West Coast diggings. Mr D'Albedhyll, accountant in the Bank of New South Wales, deponed to the fact of prisoner having come to the Bank for a draft on Melbourne for £260, in favor of Mrs Mary M'lntyre. The money was paid in by prisoner in notes ; £5 and £lO notes, nearly all new.
