THE LATE MAJOR VON TEMPSKY.

Sir, —A short time ago there appeared in the columns of your late contemporary, a letter suggesting tbat a concert or an amateur performance should be got up in Westport and the neighbouring townships for the benefit of the family of the late Major Von Tempsky. Such a deserving object should recommend itself without the aid of argument to the benevolent, and I regret that no steps have been taken towards carrying out the suggestion. There are the amateurs; cannot they present an entertainment the proceeds- of which, might be forwarded to Auckland, where a fund has already been raised by public subscription ? Or cannot our musical friends give a concert in aid of the ■same purpose ? One or both of these tilings might be done, as in the case of. other benevolent objects of a local nature, and I think there is little doubt that in the present dearth of rational amusement they would be liberally patronised by the public. We have been kept on tiptoe of expectation for some weeks past by the promise of a dramatic performance. Surely the gentlemen conn cted with it might make an effort and play for the object named. It would reflect much credit on their efforts and I have no doubt would be thankfully received by the bereaved family of the late gallant officer, and would be gratefully acknowledged.
