VOLUNTEERS WANTED.
Though far removed from the " seat of war;" (miserable misnomer) itseems that the West Coast is not to be altogether deprived of sharing in the honor and glory (]) of tho chance of fighting the Maoris. An advertisement appears in the West Coast Times, signed by Captain W. Gr. Stack, District Adjutant, calling for fifty able-bodied men, to be enrolled in the Armed Constabulary Force. It states they must be under thirty years of ageunmarriedj and the terms offered, are three shillings and six* pence per day, with rations, and one suit of clothing Whether these terms will be sufficient to induce men to come forward and enrol themselves, is more than doubtful. A few doubtless there are, who, hard up, and anxious to seize hold of any opportunity of getting away to another part of the colony, will present themselves at the adjutants office for enrolment; but consideringthe uhininvitingaspect afforded by the present conduct of the war. and the paltry remuneration offered, no man with any show of earning a livelihood on this Coast is likely to avail himself of the offer to enlist. It argues very badly for the way in which matters are managed at head-quarters when the Government have to send so far as Hokitika for recruits, and looks as if those living nearer the scene of action Wure shy of entering into engagements with the authorities, who are supposed to have the management, or rather mis-management, of the war.
