POLITICAL NEWS.
In a late issue we published a telegram from our Wellington correspondent, intimating the defeat of Mr Fox's motion for an immediate dissolution, and stating that Mr Stafford declined to say what advice he intended to give to the Governor. "We now learn that after the motion for going into Committee of Supply was carried, and the first item read, Mr Vogel moved that the Chairman report progress. The discission thereon lasted till nearly ten o'clock next morning, and Mr Fox intimated that his party were prepared similarly to resist every vote until the Government intimated its intentions with regard to a dissolution. The proceedings of the House the following night consisted merely of so much speaking against time, during which an attempt to count out was repeatedly made, only a few members remaining in the House at a time. Some words used by Mr Eeynolds
relative to some members being bought and sold, were ordered to be taken down.
A late telegram published in the West Coast Times, informs us that on the 6th instant, Mr Harrison moved, that "it is advisable that the extent of the liability of the County of Westland for Canterbury debts should be fixed by arbitration ; and that leave be granted to bring in a bill on the subject." The motion which was violently opposed by Messrs. Bell, Vogel, Travers, Reynolds, and Pox, was strongly supported by Mr Hall and the Miuistry, and was eventually carried by a majority of 13 votes. The second reading of the Bill was fixed for Thursday, the Bth. Considering the very small amount of actual busi*. ness, transacted by the House during the present session, the carrying of this important measure by Mr Harrison* must be looked upon as a great success*
