CHARLESTON NEWS.
The public meeting held at the Melbourne Hotel, on Tuesday evening for the purpose of electing two new members of the Progress Committee was very poorly attended and proved to be anything but public. Mr Gasquoin was voted to the chair, and Messrs Jones and Parker were elected to supply the place of those who recently resigned. Kennedy's Melbourne Hotel was sold on Tuesday last to Gilmer & Co., of Westport, for the sum of £9OO. The hitherto disputed title to the Nile Bridge, has at last been settled,
and Mr Allen admitted owner, by an arrangement, however, of £4OO paid to Mr M'Carthy who had a claim to the property. In the Wardens Court, on Monday, the case of Forsyth and Masters v. Hall and party was decided, and judgment given for plaintiffs against Hall to the amount of £5 Is 9d; and against the other defendants of £7l 3s, costs to be divided between defendants.
