ADDISON'S FLAT.

A ball and supper in aid of the funds of the Westport hospital was held at the Dan O'Connell Hotel, on Monday evening, and although it was predicted by some that it would hare been a total falure, I am happy to say that it was a most successful gathering.

Mr A. Daly, member of the hospital committee, was one of the chief promoters of the ball, and although he laboured under many disadvantages, it must be gratifying to the committee that their exertions met with such a favourable result.

The rooui was given by Mr Daly for the occasion, and was tastefully decorated. The Committee worked themselves the day of the ball, and made every requisite arrangement. "When dancing was about to commence, it was discovered that one of the musicians could not attend; however, another generous professor was engaged, and tools advantage of the opportunity afforded by charging one pound, more for his services than on ordinary occasions. Dancing commenced at nine o'clock and was continued with spirit until near daybreak, when the various attendants sought some rest. Mr Daly has handed the treasurer of the Westport Hospital £37 19s, which speaks well for the charitable people of Addison's.

Mining matters are looking a little better than they did a few weeks since and several claims which had been abandoned, have been taken up by new hands, on the third township. At the Shamrock, in most instances, new shafts are being sunk, and in many cases by parties from other diggings. A number of men are at present prospecting back of the ranges; among the number Mr Addison.

A good many parties still find remunerative employment on the Plat. The Mechanic's Institute is closed, for what reason I am not aware. The Eoyal Exchange Casino is being deprived of its iron roof to convert it into cash. A good many from Addison's have gone to Auckland, but the place has become more steady, and there are several good claims both on the second and third townships, as well as on the Shamrock Lead.
