Correspondence.

To the Editor of the Westport Times and Charleston Argus.
SiK, As there is £SOO voted to cut tracks in different parts of the coast, and that sum being utterly inadequate for the purpose, I have taken the liberty of offering the following suggestions:— Tou are doubtlessly aware that all the up country diggings are on the north bank of the Buller, and that the road is on the south bank, and of course quite useless to the diggers, and prospecters now at work. Some years ago the G-overnment made a good road and packing track up the Waiinangoroa river and across Mount Kochfort to the coalfields, for the purpose of packing down the pillars of coal, for the Otago Exhibition. The country beyond the coalfields is all open, and at a very trifling expense the road could be carried across the country to the Lyell river, where it would join the Nelson road, thus opening up the country at the back of the Old diggings, so long and so profitably worked. It would cross the Orekaka, and pass within five miles of the head of the Ngakawr ,and eleven miles from the Mokihinui. Allthiscountry has been proved to be auriferous, but from the impracticability of gettingprovisions to it, the probabilities are that it will remain unworked for a considerable time yet, unless the matter be taken up by our Commissioner and the public, the money voted being in my opinion amply sufficient to carry the road through the whole distance, a great part of which I have travelled over myself. I would also venture to suggest the propriety of offering a bonus to the discoverer of a payable gold-field in that direction, which I have no donbt would be a great stimulus, as several who have travelled over the country have expressed their determination to return upon the slightest signs of any movement in that direction. I am, Sir, yours &c, M. J.
