Thomas Berdan was charged with being drunk and disorderly. Mr Maguire said that his attention had been attracted to the tent where the prisoner lived, by hearing screams. He went inside, and found the prisoner attacking his wife, and had nearly bitten a piece out of her arm. Witness arrested him, and took him to the lock-up. The Magistrate said it was well that the charge was only that of drunkenness, had it been otherwise it would have been worse for him. Eined 20s, or 24 hours. John Jones and Michael Peel, for being drunk, were each fined 20s, or 24 hours. Stainer v. 'Riley. —Complainant said that defendant came to his house, the Bed, White, and Blue Hotel, about 12 o'clock at night, used abusive language, and threatened him, at the same time challenging him to fight. Another witness corroborated the evidence of complainant as to the defendant's violence and language. In cross-examination witness denied that he saw complainant strike defendant, but admitted that he pushed him out after the language and violence. Defeudant said that he went into the house to ask for drink, and Stainer struck him and knocked him down. After this he might have used bad language, but he was provoked to do it by the complaiuant. The Magistrate considered that both parties were to blame, and dismissed the case. Amelia Lumley v. Fleming, —No appearance of either party. Several other verdicts were given by default, for debts claimed and costs, but as the various amounts were not disclosed by the plaintiffs or the Court, our reporter was unable to give them. One case, Leslie v. Graham, was postponed till Monday, as defendant had not been served in time to comply with the Act.
