Total Loss or the Schooners Cheetah, Atjbei', and Raven, —The records of the devastation caused by the late gale arc being painfully made manifest, the list of casualties having been unfortunately increased by the report thai has reached us of the loss of the above-named vessels. They left Sydney, bound to Newcastle, or, the 14th inst., in ballast, and arc total wracks. The Raven went on shore on the 15th inst., two m'.lcs south of Crowdy Head, all hands saved, the ship being hove well up on the braeh. She is owned by Mr Mctealf, and is insured. The Cheetah, belonging to Mr C. Levi, and the Abbey, were both lost on the same evening, three miles north of Crowdy Head, nil heads saved. The Chootah is insured in Metcalfe's office, and the Abbej in the Sydney Marino for ,£800; but; it is to bo feared that the list of disasters lias not yet b vn completed, as other vessels are missing. The Croncral Wool, barque, bolonging to Captain Campbell; Gratia, brig, owned by Mr .1. Cook, and the schooner Bapwon, are all anxiously inquired for. The chief officer of the Haven roports that, on the I7lh inst., he saw the holies of two men drifting off the rocks at Crowdy Head —they had
clothing on ; there was also part of a ship's boat, and the lop of a dock-houso, which did not belong to either of the vessels ashore.— " Sydney Herald," Feb. 21. The 8.8, Southland did not leave the Bluff for the scene of the wreck of the General Grant until Monday lust. She had been some days ready for sea, and the detention in port, we understand, arose from the continued indisposition of the chief diver, whoso services arc indispensiblo to the success of the object for ; which the vessel has been put on the berth for the Auckland Islands, viz.—to recover as much as possible of the gold and other valuables contained in the sunken ship, of the whereabouts of which Sir. Teer, who accompanies the expedition, is cognisant. It is to be hoped that the diver's ill-health may not prevent the carrying out of the project of the enterprising owners of the Southland. — " Southland Times."
