Gawith, Upper Plain, are visiting Mr and Mrs K. Ellison, Hawke’s Bay. Mr and Mrs E. M. Hodder and family, Second Street, are spending the holidays at Paraparaumu Beach. / Mr and Mrs W. B. Yates and; family, Masterton, will leave at the e«d of the week for 3 weeks’ holiday at Paraparaumu. The engagement is announced of Gladys (Queenie) youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs F. ,Schmidt, of Norsewood, to Shirley Vi Petersen, oldest son of Mr and Mrs F. Petersen, of Essex Street, Masterton. The death is announced frodfc'Auekland of Professor Sir Algernon W. Thomas, K.C.M.G., aged 80 yeans. He was knighted at the time of the Coronation for services to education. He was one of the four foundation professors of the Auckland University College in 1883, and chairman of the Grammar School Board since 191 G. He recentlp attended' five prize-giving ceremonies at* grammar schools in two days. He stumbled on an uneven platform and is believed to have injured his heart in attempting to regain his foothold. In a tribute to deceased this morning, the Hon. P. Fraser said that he was one of the foremost figures in educational activities in the Dominion, and the value of his work as a scientist was acknowledged far beyond! the boundaries of New Zealand. His work for the Auckland Grammar Schools during what was considered as his “retirement years” was a lasting monument to him as an eduaetionalist. It was a source of satisfaction to all who knew him, and especially the Government, when ,he was knighted. M
