ORCHESTRAL SOCIETY

EXCELLENT CONCERT. The Master ton Orchestral Society last night presented an excellent programme in the Municipal Hall to a large audience, which thoroughly enjoyed' the bin of fare. The playing of the orchestra was outstanding for its high standard, and Mr J. Candy, the conductor, is to be congratulated on the state of efficiency to which he lias brought, the orchestra under his skilful baton. The members of the orchestra, always keen to do their best, excelled themselves last night by their clever interpretations of some very difficult numbers. The manner in. which the orchestra played emphasises the fact that Masterton possesses .one of the finest orchestras in the Dominion. Last night’s concert was a triumph for Mr Candy and the members of the orchestra. Many of the audience were agreeably surprised at the high state of efficiency displayed by the orchestra. It was generally considered that the concert was probably the best ever placed before a Masterton audience. The items given by the soloists, Misses Nita Ingley (whose singing was particularly warmly applauded) and M. Holmwood (whose outstanding ability in playing the piano was again marked) and Mr T. T. Redman (whose mostdelightful playing of the flute was. greatly appreciated), provided the audience with entertainment of a character too seldom presented in Masterton. The personnel of the orchestra was: — Conductor, Mr J. Candy; at the piano, Miss M. Holmwood, Miss N. McLaren; at the organ. Miss A. M. Jones, L.A.8.; violins, Mrs B, R. Bunny, Miss H. Gordon, Miss P. M. Thomas, Miss L. Johnston, Miss E. Bale, Miss B. Tildesley, Miss D. Larsen, Miss N. Judd, ( Messrs E. Cambourn, E. Larsen, ,B. Norman, W. Parker, A. W Renall, J. Grey, T. L. Bullock, A. Cruickshank; viola, Mr D. Allen; eelli, Miss I. Donald, Mr E. F. Wilson; basso, Mr R. Davies; flauti, Mr T. T. Redman, Mr D. Ilunn; clarionetti, Mr W. 11. Snowsill, Mr J .Peters; cornet, Mr T. E. Sayer; trombone, Mr C. Mills; tympani, Mr S. Burnip. The programme was as follows: — Overture, “Fra Diavolo,’’ the orchestra; song, “Love and Music,” Miss Ingley; (a) “Lord Peter’s Stable Boy” (P. A. Grainger), (b) “Handel in the Strand'”' (P. A. Grainger), the orchestra; flute solo, “Carnival de Venice” (Giulio Briccialdi), Mr T. T. Redman, with orchestral accompaniment ; # suite, “Summer Days” (Eric Coates), (1) In a Country Lane, (2) On the Edge of the Lake, (3) At the dance, the orchestra; suite, “St. Agnes’ Eve” (S. ColeridgeTaylor), the orchestra; Concerto for Pianoforte Solo and Orchestra; No. 2 in Bb Ist Movement, Allegro con brio (L. Van Beethoven), Miss M. Holmwood; Roman/.a from “Cavalleria Rusticana,” “Mother, You Know the Story” (Mascagni), Miss Nita Ingley; (a) “Berceuse” (A. Jarnfeldt), (b) “Preludium” (A. Jarnfeldt), the orchestra; Selections from the Compositions of Tschaikowsky, the-. orchestra; God Save the King.'

Misses Ingley and Holmwood.and the lady members of the orchestra were the recipients of bouquets, one of those received by Miss Holmwood being a sheaf of tulips from, the Masterton Orchestral Society in appreciation of her services.
