TENNIS

MEMORIAL CLUB.

ANNUAL REPORT.

The annual report of the Memorial Tennis Club states, inter alia: —Unfortunately, there was no repetition of the favourable weather conditions which prevailed during the previous summer and the 1935-36 season is noteworthy principally for the succession of wet week-ends experienced. Although this necessarily resulted in the curtailment of play, the club, all things considered, had a pleasant and successful year. The enthusiasm shown in spite of the difficulties encountered augurs well for the coming season. Three teams were entered in the Wairarapa Association’s competitions, but although none was successful, all players acquitted themselves well. The active membership for the year was 72. Thanks to our groundsman, Mr Macarthy, the courts were again in excellent condition. During the season they were placed at the disposal of the Association for its annual tournament and were also made use of by the Technical School for practice purposes weekly. The club competitions were well contested, the winners of the various events being:—Ladies’ championship singles (Hughes Cup): Miss Nell Cohen. (“B” grade): Miss L. Armstrong. Ladies’ championship doubles: Misses Nell Cohen and P. E. Gee. Ladies ’ handicap singles: Miss Nell Cohen. Ladies’ handicap doubles: Misses A. Dixon and E. Wickens. Men’s championship singles (Burridge Cup): L. B. Phillips. (“B” grade): E. M. Halse. Men’s championship doubles: J. A. Kennedy and L. Person, Men’s handicap singles: E. M. Halse. Men’s handicap doubles: J. A. Kenedy and L. Person. Combined championship doubles (Mills Cup): L. T. Wylie and Miss Nell Cohen. Combined handicap doubles: L. T. Wylie and Miss Nell Cohen.

The club is indebted to its president, Mr J. Jameson, and to the vice-presid-ents, Mrs S. Gilman, Mr H. L. Esau and Mr S; A. Mills, for donations and continuance of their loyal support. Thanks are alsioi due to Mr D. B. Curry for his services as hon. auditor, and to the Press. —For the Committee, J. Jameson (President), D. A. Hunn (Hon. Secretary).
