DOMINION CHAMPIONSHIPS. lIAWKSWORTH IN GOOJ* FORM. NEW PLYMOUTH, This Day. 1 Last night’s play id"'the' Dominion championship and handicap badminton tournament was alive with /surprises, brilliance and excitement, bnt > [ never so splendidly as in the defeats of the Dominion men’s and women’s singles champions. Undoubtedly the most brilliant game of the night was that in which J. Spedding (New Plymouth) defeated the New Zealand champion, J. J. Neale (Wellington), in a memorable match, with the issue hanging in the balance until the end of each' set. Second only to this match was the victory of the young Dunedin girl, Miss M. Kerr, who ®rose from the ranks of • the unknown to defeat decisively the New Zealand women’s champion, Mrs Phyllis Wren. Miss Kerr displayed ideal match temperament, and is marked for a glowing future in the game. The programme put through last night was the heaviest in the tournament. At present several of the championships have reached the semi-final stage, and play continued until almost midnight. The tournament will finish tomorrow night, with the finals in all divisions. ‘ Results: —

Their first experience of snow was enjoyed by a number of visitors to the New Plymouth Dominion championship badminton tournament, when a party of fourteen were the guests of the. Taranaki Association on a visit to the North Egmont Mountain House yesterday afternoon. The weather was -too rough for clear visibility, but snow fell during the party’s stay at the hostel.
This afternoon the visiting players will be entertained to a bus observation tour of New Plymouth, and ; ,afternoon tea at Pukekura Park.—(P.A.)
