Mr Gordon Laing, of Messrs Thos. Bortlnvick and Sons’ staff, is at present a patient in Glenwood Hospital. A Press message announces the death, suddenly at Auckland,, of Mr I. W. Matthewson, General Manager of the Union S.S. Co., Ltd. Mr 11. G. Miller, M.A., Librarian at Victoria College University, and Wairarapa’s only Rhodes Scholar, is on a visit to Masterton in connection with a request to submit a report on the Masterton Public Library.
The engagement is announced of Miss Mary Frances Jewitt, third daughter of Mr and Mrs E. Jewitt, Haunui, Eketahuna, to Mr Roy Hunt Sharpe, younger son of Mr and Mrs M. B. Sharpe, Petone. At the annual meeting of the Carterton Bowling Club last night votes of condolence were passed to the relatives ofx the late Messrs W. Fisher and J. Hiddlestone. Reference was made to the fact that Mr Fisher was a foundation member of the club and had taken a keen and active interest in its affairs right up. to the time of his death. Mr 11. T. Dawson, who has retired on superannuation from the chief postmasitership at Nelson was farewelled by a large gathering of the cojnbined staffs. Relerence was made to the very high esteem in which Mr Dawson was held and good wishes were extended to him for happy years of retirement. Presentations were made to Mr and Mrs Dawson. Mr A. N. Wallace, Chief Postmaster, Blenheim, has succeeded Mr Dawson.
At the annual meeting of the Carterton Bowling Club last night the following officers were elected for the ensuing year: —Patron, Mr J. Udy; president, Mr N. Williams; vice-president, Mr C. Callender; secretary, and treasurer, Mr C. H. Barber; auditor, Mr C. J. De Lacey; match recorder, Mr C. J. De Lacey; committee, Messrs G. Huglian, A. Stubbs, J. L. Harris, W. C. Robertson, G. Riggs, J. Harp, A. Tucker; match committee, Messrs C. J. DeLacey, G. Hart and G. Riggs; green committee, Messrs C. H. Barber and W. 0. Robertson; refreshment committee, Messrs G. Huglian and W. .Masson; social committee, Messrs J. Harp, C. Larsen, P. Bain. and H. Meyriek; delegates to Wairarapa Bowling Centre, Messrs C. H. Barber and A. Stubbs.
