TYPHOID FEVER

AUCKLAND OUTBREAK. DEATH OF CHILD. AUCKLAND, Monday. An outbreak of typhoid fever involving the death of a Maori child, the removal of several patients who contracted it, and the isolation of others in the same ward occurred at Auckland Hospital last week. The outbreak was caused by the child wh« died. He was sent in as a pneumonia case and the child was treated for this complaint. The Health Department stated, however, that the child had both, pneumonia and typhoid fever All precautions are being taken at the hospital to prevent the infection from spreading.

The infection started in the children’s block. When it was discovered the ward was closed, the few children who had been infected being removed and others isolated. Several young men who were infected have also been removed.

For August, the Health Department has received 12 notifications of typhoid infection in the Auckland province.—■ (P.A.)
