MEETING OF DIRECTORS. The General Secretary, Mr A. E. Bate, in his monthly report to the Y.M.C.A. directors, stated that the work of the association had proceeded at a steady pace throughout July. In the senior department, in addition to the twice weekly billiard tournament for the Y.M.C.A. Cup, a handicap tournament had been organised within the membership, and a pleasant evening spent. Mr J. Nichols was the winner. Winter Sports and Esperanto Club activities were being maintained as usual, while the Optimist Club had* been revived along new lines, and was promising very membership comprising a group of j«mg fellows. Junior department activities followed the lines of the weekly programme. In the primary school boys’ section, the leading boys had been formed into a select group for more advanced work aiming at the securing of tlieir Red Triangle Badge, enquiries for boys had been revived from farmers, but suitable boys K of work were very difficult to find
Hfet now. One lad had been placed in an industry and one in a shop during the month. Gymnasium classes were, being continued as usual, and though, there had been a falling-off in attendance in the men's classes, the other classes were being well maintained, and good work was being done. The usual service and community activities continued to receive attention, and thirtyseven gatherings other than those of the Y.M.C.A. were held in the rooms. The statement of receipts and payments for the month showed a credit balance of 3s Id, and in other respects the finances were in a better condjticn than for the same period in the previous year.
Gratification was expressed at the action of the Trust Lands Trustees and the ■Lcarthy Estate in making grants association’s funds. The secretary of 'the Melbourne Association wrote indicating that an appeal for funds in that city for £SOOO had resulted in nearly £6OOO being raised. The result had greatly encouraged the directors and staff. A further discussion took place on the proposed building extensions, several plans being submitted. It was decided to go into these more thoroughly and obtain approximate costs of alternate schemes, for consideration at a later meeting. Reference was made to the splendid juvenile concert organised by the Ladies’ Auxiliary, and a resolution of congratulation was passed. Other detail matters were attended to in the usual way, the meeting being closed with prayer by the Rev. J. E. Jones.
