WAIRARAPA V. WELLINGTON. i HOME TEAM’S BRILLIANT WIN. The high standard of hockey in the Wairarapa to-day was emphasised in no uncertain manner at Lansdowne on Saturday when Wairarapa obtained a brilliant victory over a strong Wellington team, before an exceptionally large attendance of spectators. It must have gladdened the hearts of those keen enthusiasts who, in the lean years in this district, stuck so staunchly to the game and “kept the home fires burning” when the' outlook was desolate, to see Wairarapa play such perfect hockey that the home team was able to handsomely defeat the city eleven. There was no fluke about the win. From start to finish, Wairarapa played like clockwork, passing unselfishly, centering with precision, and defending in great style. It w r as a splendid win for a splendid team,. The teams were as follow: —-

Wairarapa: Tildeslcy, Massey, Byers, , M. Knutsen, C. Knutsen, Stubbings, Jackson, Foster, Worsfold, S. Fisher, Hooper. > Wellington: Bremner, Shand, Perrin, i Wood, Harrison, Chisholm, Gapes, i Phypers, Wallace, Edwards, Geronson. Wairarapa started off at a great pace, • Fisher, Foster and Worsfold playing , splendid hockey. Attack after attack > followed on the Wellington territory, ■ and a few minutes after the game starti ed a brilliant piece of play by Worsfold : brought a goal to Waiarrapa. A min- . ute later another brilliant effort, this , time by Foster, saw the latter raise Wairarapa’s score to two goals. Wellington, combining well and by good stick work, attacked, but Foster, Stubbirigs and Massey relieved, and Fisher and Worsfold carried play along to Wellington territory, where Worsfold, twenty minutes after the. start of the I game, registered his second goal, and the third one for Wairarapa. Not discouraged, Wellington attacked in splendid style, but the Wairarapa defence held, and Foster, Fisher, Hooper and Worsfold broke away again in a pretty piece of work, Fisher eventually coining through to score Wairarapa’s fourth goal. The play was all in favour of Wairarapa, and the spectators were treated to sonic spectacular hockey. In all departments Wairarapa were outclassing Wellington, and the local team, ■ through the agency of Worsfold, who was the most brilliant player on the field, hoisted its score to five goals, while Wellington had failed to score. The game was played at a rattling pace* and just before the call of time Wallace and Perrin scored goals for Wellington, making the half-time score: Wairarapa 5, Wellington 2. The second half was also played at a great pace, and the interest of the spectators was held throughout by one of the most thrilling exhibitions of hockey seen in Wairarapa for many years. Wairarapa increased its score to 8 goals, while the Wellington team brought its tally up to 4 goals. For Wairarapa, Worsfold and Fisher scored goals, and for Wellington Phypers and Edwards. Towards the close of the game a Wellington player was ordered off for disputing the referee’s decision. Messrs G. Hayne and D. Burgess made excellent referees, being impartial and prompt in their decisions, and contributing, by the excellence of their 1 work, to the brilliant game provided. JUNIOR MATCH. ANOTHER WIN FOR WAIRARAPA. The Wairarapa and Wellington juniors met at Lansdowne on Saturday afternoon, and this, too, was a fast game, giving the spectators a splendid exhibition of really good hockey. The form displayed by the.Wairarapa team was of a high standard, and was a pleasant revelation to enthusiasts. The local team were seen to advantage in smart stick work, and combined well, being quick to retrieve mistakes. At , half-time Wairarapa led by 4 to nil, and the final score was: Wairarapa 5, Wellington 2. For Wairarapa, Hunter (2), Jones, Fisher and Neilson scored goals. Messrs Fisher and Watts were particularly capable referees. After the game the visiting teams were the guests of the Wairarapa Hockey Association at dinner at the Empire Hotel. Mr G. Hayne, president of the Wairarapa Hockey Association, presided. LADIES’ GAMES. The Wairarapa Women’s Hockey Association fixtures were continued on Saturday. On the Lansdowne grounds, High School had a close call to head off Old Girls by 3/2 in a very evenly contested game. On the same ground, St. Matthew’s, who are showing greatly improved form, had Excelsior fully extended to win by 2/0. Greytown completely outclassed Carterton, lit Carterton, and ran up the big score of 13/0. Te Ore Ore could not field a team, and forfeited to Gladstone. In the junior section, the first challenge match for the Morris Cup was played between Excelsior (holders) and Old' Girls. The match was won by the holders by 1/0.
