THE CATHOLIC CHURCH.

(The Editor.) Sir,—lnto your report of Bishop Graham Brown’s speech on Thursday afternoon, an error has crept, which is of more importance than appears at first sight. The Bishop is reported as speaking of “the Latin Church,’ * with the words Catholic Church in parentheses. His Lordship was speaking of the Roman Church, which in the east is called the Latin Church. No loyal and instructed member of the Anglican Church would refer to that organisation which gives allegiance' to the Pope as THE Catholic Church. If he wished to be polite he might call it the Roman Catholic Church —or he might call it something else. A short study of the English prayer book, the Creed, and the prayer for all sorts and conditions of men, will show that the English Church claims to be a portion of the Catholic or Universal Church, and a study of the NIX. Article will show the English Church speaking of the Church of Rome. By making it appear that the Bishop meant “Catholic” when he said “Latin,” your reporter did his learning and loyalty an injustice. Not for one minute do I wish to run down the Roman Catholic Church —for her discipline and Christian self-sacri-fice I have the greatest admiration — but I cannot grant her the sole and unqualified title of Catholic, and most certainly the Bishop did not do so. Thanking you. —I am, etc.,

ANNE FLETCHER,
