Their Excellencies, Lord an^- Lady Galway, arrived at Hastings cm. Thursday afternoon from Rotorua on an informal three day visit. Yesterday morning was spent- in visiting colleges at Havelock North and the High School in Hastings. The afternoon was spent at a hunt at Okawa. Miss Etline Johnson, of Cambridge, is on a visit to friends in Masterton. Dr. A. Keys, of Wellington, is spending the week-end in Masterton, and is the guest of Mr and Mrs B. Iveson. Sir Thomas Wilford, formerly High Commissioner for New Zealand in London, returned by the Akaroa from England yesterday. Miss Lalla Vondersloot, the well known and popular WellhrAm singer and musician, is on a- visit ”o Masterton and is staying with relatives. The engagement is announced Ox. Miss Eileen Maureen Desmond, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs P. B. Desmond, Lethbridge Street, Feilding, to Mr bailey Leonard Orr, eldest son of the late Mr and Mrs R. S. Orr, Lansdowne, Masterton. The induction of the Rev. F. R. Mann took place at the- Martmboroug i Presbyterian Church on Thursday night The interim moderator of tne charge, the Rev. R. Byers, presided and conducted the induction ceremony. The Rev. D. MeNeur preached the induction sermon, the Rev. John Davie addressed the newly-inducted minister and the Rev. R. S. Keenan addressed the congregation. At the conclusion ot the service, a musical evening was held in the hall. To-day Mrs Emma Harries, of Cargill Road, Dunedin, is celebrating her 102nd birthday, relatives from all over the South Island being present at the birthday celebrationis. Mrs Harrie'S, > who is in-possession of all her faculties, was born in London in 1834, goMg to Australia at the age of 22.. married in Australia and with her husband came to New Zealand in 1888, arriving at Dunedin, where she lias resided.ever since. Mrs Harries is in good health and up to a year ago enjoyed motor drives' around Dunedin. Mr J. A! Grant, of the staff of the Masterton branch of the Bank of New Zealand, has received notice of his transfer to the Bank’s Auckland branch. Mr Grant has been honorary secretary of St. Andrew’s Society and at a social evening held on Thursday evening he was presented with a set of gold .sleeve links and studs in appreciation of his services to the Society. It was announced during the evening that Mr G. Campbell Dickel, of Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd.; had been elected to fill Mr Grant’s place. The late Mr E. L. Peters, whose death was recorded in yesterday’s “Daily Times,” was a well known coach proprietor in the old days, being one of the founders of the “Petyjs line of coaches,” running at between Palmerston North, Woodvilie, and Waiouru-Tokaanu and several oth•er routes. Later lie joined the service of the Wellington Tramway Department and was driving both the horse trams and later the electric ears, where he was popularly known among drivers as “Dad,” being the oldest driver on the ears. Failing health compelled him to move to Masterton about eight years ago to live with his daughter, Mrs R. Jenkins.
