NIGHT SHIFT DISPUTE
FIFTY MEN ON STRIKE. • WELLINGTON, Tuesday. Fifty men, the staff of Metters, Ltd., porcelain enamellers, Petone, went on .strike, at the, close of. work on Monday, following a dispute as to the working time of men on the night shift. " The position is that the night shift of only four men required payment as for 40 hours for only 37-i hours’ actual work,” stated"the company, in answer to an enquiry as to the cause of the stoppage. “The company claims that its demand; is in. accordance with the last existing' award, and that in this it is supported, by the secretaries of the only two unions interested in the dispute. The men concerned were not dismissed, but they refused to continue Under the company’s- conditions. In sympathy, the whole staff made a demand which the company could not accept, and all hands at once ceased work.. Contrary to established procedure in such circumstances, work was left at a stage in process when serious loss and damage to plant were involved.”
The men are to hold a meeting at 10 a.m. to-morrow. —(P.A.)
