DEFENCE OF KENYA

FORTIFICATION OF MOMBASA. (Received Wednesdav, 10.25 a.m.) LONDON, Tuesday. The “Sun-Herald” says that important defence works shortly will bo erected at Mombasa, with the object of bringing that port within the defended class. Heavy guns and searchlights are expected to arrive within a month and the forts will be manned by a small volunteer unit, recruited locally. It is pointed out in London that the fortifications are not connected with the international situation. Plans for defending Mombasa have been considered for a long time past.

Mombasa, the chief port of Kenya Colony, is situated on a fertile coral island" off the east coast of Africa. It has two harbours —Kilindini and Mombasa. The latter is about 30 feet deep. A short railway connects Mombasa with the mainland, and it is the terminal of the Uganda Railway.
