HELPING THE NEEDY.
The clothes drive which was held in Masterton on Saturday last recalls the fact that Masterton lias many public-spirited citizens who are ever giving service in the interests of the needy of the town. The lot of those residents who are not blessed with a means _ of providing for all the necessities of life would be very much harder were it not for the assistance which they receive. One really wonders what position would arise were all voluntary assistance to cease. Perhaps it might produce good results, for the Government would then be compelled to _ do its duty in regard to the families of the unemployed, which contain in their ranks most of the needy of Masterton. The authorities would then probably hud that it had to face the situation squarely and cease to waste money on useless boards and commissions, and devoting such money instead to making the lot of the needy easier than it is to-day. It is a matter for congratulation that Masterton possesses so many splendid women and men who are prepared to devote much of their time in assisting the needy in a practical manner. The organisations to which most of them; belong are quietly and continuously carrying on work among the needy, and of this the general public seldom hear.
