DRAMA LEAGUE
FESTIVAL AT MASTERTON. The Wairarapa Drama League’s festival Avas brought to a successful conclusion in the St. MattheAv’s Parish Hall last night, Avhen there Avas another croAvded house. The president, Mr H. B. Tomlinson, stated that Mr Baldrvin would not gh r e his final judgment that night, but Avould send the results to the teams concerned.
Mr Tomlinson, speaking at the conclusion of the festival, f thanked the public for its very strong support. Commenting on “Jane Wogan” (by the Anglican Church team) Mr BaldAvin said this A\ r as a play that Avas stark in its details, Avith a .surprise at the finish that Avas Avell worked up .to. Both Martha and Lettice gai-e consistently good performances. Jane Wogan had to slioav very many emotions and managed them all splendidly. John Wogan’s make-up Avas good to a certain point, but he did not look like an open air man. Mary Childs did all that Avas necessarv for her part. “The Lonely of Heart” (Featherston Drama Circle) was on the Avliole, said the judge, a pleasing rendering. The dressing indicated the period . of the play and the scene Avas effective. Sally garm a very SAvect rendering of her part. Elizabeth also gave . a beautiful rendering. Julian and Felicitv Avere a delight to Avatcli. They both had difficult tasks. Sir John Poel gaA 7 o a dignified, rendering, but his make-up Avas not very successful.. Referring to the presentation of “Legend”" (Knox Drama Club) Mr BaldAvin stated that Mrs Reed succeeded in creating atmosphere. She was ably assisted by Mrs Walters, avlio was practical and humorous. Mr Falloivs Avas so good that it did not appear that his part Avas acted. The Stranger had a difficult part, but atmosphere Avas lacking. There Avas not much room, for criticism of f 1 Something Beautiful (Phoenix Drama Club) said the judge, avlio stated that this thriller provided a refreshing finish. The murder scene Avas a difficult piece of good acting, carried through Avithout a hitch. Miss Pocket Avas effect He. Ephraim Chance gave a good sketch; Lady Lettice Nutley AA-as very charming, Lena Stalin gave a sound performance and Karl did good work. CASTS OF PLAYS.
