HEAVY FLOODS

IN WAXROA DISTRICT. WAIROA, Monday. The heaviest flood experienced in the locality for many years occurred at the week-end in the Wairoa district. A number of bridges were carried iaway, culverts were washed out, and slips occurred on almost every road. was in high flood, and almost •rifKed the level of the traffic bridge. Aflarge amount of driftwood and timber was washed up on the beaches at Tukemokihi. It is reported that 15in. of rain fell in 18 hours. Nuhaka township was inundated by the flood waters, and many dwellings liad from one to five feet of water inside them. * Mr W. Neville, a farmer on Portland Road, who was proceeding to his home by launch with a load of stores, was reported missing, but it is now stated that he is safe at Mahia, where he was washed ashore with the launch. The highway to Napier is open to 'traffic. * j Slips in the Tarewa hills and on the Wairoa-Gisborne road are being removed, passengers' being transferred. Heavy losses of stock are reported from Nuhaka—(P.A.)
