HARRIERS

KIATERE CLUB. OFFICIAL OPENING, In spite of the cold southerly Av<*ather, there Avas a good muster of members and supporters for the official opening of the Kiaterc Harrier Club s season on Saturday. The sloav and junior packs Avcnt off together, under the club captain, for a run of about 24 miles, Avith a fast finish over tho last quarter-mile. They were folloAved about ten minutes later by the fast pack, under the vice-captain. This pack included four visitors from the Alasterton Club, and covered a distance of aboout three miles. It Avas decided, oAving to the Aveather, not to stop for an organised “run in.” After the run, afternoon tea Avas sensed in the Epiphany Hall .by the ladies’ committee. Air C. Traill, president, officially declared the season open, and briefly revicAved. the prospects for the season. He also introduced a handsome challenge cup presented by an anonymous donor for competition among the juniors. Mr A. J. F. Carter, club captain, conveyed the good Avislies of the Olympic Club, and spoke a feAV Avords about the coming visit of a Ncav Zealand team to Australia. Air L. Hack, captain of the Alasterton Harriers, spoke on behalf of the visitors. A hearty vote of thanks to the ladies’ committee, proposed by Air Traill, Avas carried Avith musical honours. An impromptu sing-song gave plenty of fun, and the singing of “Auld Lang Sync” brought the afternoon to a clos^. An exceptionally enjoyable dance in the Epiphany Hall in the evening, successfully opened the social side of the club’s activities. With Mr E. Green at the piano, and Mr J. Burns as M.C., everything Avent with a swing, and an excellent supper completed a successful evening.
