HOCKEY

NOTES BY “BULLY-OFF.”

The season Avill open the first Saturday after Easter, so players should see they are all fit and all their gear ready.

Look to your boots and sec that they are avcll oiled and studs not too long, or, if Avcaring bars, see that ncAV ones are put on. # * * *

See that your uoav stick, if using one, is bound Avith insulation tape (or, better still, medicated tape), or, if an old one, take off the old tape and see that there aro no splinters or broken pieces, then rebind Avith the tape. A few drops of oil dropped on the top of the handle Avill help to make the handle more supple. * * * *

I would not advise too much training, as all the playing fields are in a very hard state, and some of the players Avho aro wearing heavy buttons or studs in their boots Avill be complaining of sore feet if they do not take it easy. A Aveek’s rain Avould be of great benefit to the playing areas. * * # *

There are far too many lady players playing AA r ithout pads, and the sooner they use them the better, for it Avill give them moro confidence Avhen the season opens, and a knock on the shin uoav might mean trouble later on.

Players Avould help the game of hockey and also the referees by studying the rules, and if in doubt about. any decision given by the referee, Avait till the match is over, and ask him Avhy he gave such a decision. Remember, . referees are human and are not infallible, and Avill always ans Aver any question if put in the right manner and at. the right time. * * * *

All clubs are having a loan time and find it hard to meet all their expenses, so it is up to all players to try and meet their obligations to their clubs and so help the associations. * * * *

The Alcn’s Association are unfortunate in losing the secretary (Air Cummings), and the Avriter hopes he will still be seen on the playing field and taking as keen an interest as before. This position is very hard to fill, and has always given the Association a lot of worry, so it is up to all club secretaries to be prompt with all correspondence and so save the Association secretary a lot of unnecessary Avriting. * * * *

I am sorry also to sec that Air A. Bate has had to give up the position of treasurer, and tho Association av ill be the loser, for his Avork was very methodical, and the auditor never had any trouble to audit his books. * * * *

The referees are losing trvo senior referees, Mr A. Stubbings and Mr S. Aloor, and it is a pity to see them drop* ping out. We have gained the Rev. Cummings (late of IlaAvkc’s Bay), Avflio is a N.Z. theory A grade referee, and a very capable referee. There are a number of young men joining up, and some of these Avill soon make themselves known.

It is hard to predict how many teams Avill bo competing this season, but if one can go on rumours the north end Avill be as strong as even South will be Aveaker in teams, but Avill have some good material to pick from.
