POWER BOARD ELECTION.

(The Editor.)

Sir, —The fact that an election will be necessary for the appointment of two Masterton representatives on the Electric Power Board denotes the resurrection of public interest in Wairarapa’s largest trading concern, and it behoves all electors to carefully weigh in their minds the business ability of those candidates offering their services.

There is but little doubt that a reconstruction of the Board is overdue, and the introduction of new blood would be an advantage in every way. It will probably be news to consumers of electricity that at the end of March, 1934, the sum of over £35,000 was lying at the Bank of New Zealand on fixed deposit and cash in hand, doing nothing to relieve the cost of current to the public, despite .the difficult times that traders and farmers were suffering. While it is sound business to create a reasonable reserve fund in a concern of this nature, it is surely unnecessary to hoard such an amount as £35,000, thus withholding from the public money that, should be distributed in the direction of electricity costs. After all, the Power Board is only a communjty affair, and in choosing cur representatives we should ask ourselves the question: Which of these men will prove capable of administering this vast sum in the best interests of the Board and the consumers. —I am, etc., A VOTER. Masterton, 14th April.
